Creams & Lotions

Acne Face Cream

Mix the following oils to 3 Heaping Tbsp of Unscented Organic Cream:

4 Drops of Tea Tree
2 Drops of Peppermint
2 Drops of Lavender

(Unfortunately, I'm not a cream-maker - at least not yet.  But unscented organic creams can be bought from pharmacies or health food stores.  You want to make sure the cream has no added medication or scents to it.  For this recipe, it is best to use a fine cream rather than a thick cream, and apply before bed.)

Hair Repair

In a 20-30ml bottle of Jojoba Oil, add the following essential oils:

5 Drops Rosemary
3 Drops Ylang Ylang

Tighten with a lid, and gently mix together before each use.  Dab a nickel-sized amount in to your hands and rub in to your hands as if you are using hand cream.  For longer hair, use a little more.  Take your oiled hands and apply to dry hair - or nearly dried hair after a shower, and run your fingers through your hair, concentrating on damaged ends.  Once finished, instead of washing your hands clean, rub the rest of what you have on your neck and arms (makes a nice little skin softener).

Toe Nail Rub

1 Tbsp Jojoba Oil
3 Drops of Tea Tree Oil
1 Drop of Cypress
1 Drop of Oregano***

After mixing oils together, take a cotton swab and apply directly on top of the nail bed of your toes, under the nail, the cuticle, and on the toes themselves.  Massage in with your fingers.  With excess oil on your hands, give your fingernails some love!  (**Note, do not apply nail polish immediately after.  Nails must be completely dried before adding polish!)
***Not recommended to apply on hands before a night out on the town as you might smell like a pizza.

Daily Dental Pain Relief

I wasn't sure where to house this very beneficial tip, as it's not a lotion, balm, bath, or spray.  Oil of Oregano is the ultimate bacteria and fungus killer.  It is an oil you can use each time you brush your teeth and use mouthwash.

Brushing:
Before brushing your teeth, use 1 Drop of Oregano Oil directly on to your toothpaste.  Brush.  (If you have a particularly sensitive area, take the brush and start there to directly get the oil working in that area.)

Mouthwash:
Before using mouthwash, pour desired amount of mouthwash in a glass, add 1 Drop of Oregano Oil to the mouthwash, swirl around, and then use as you normally would (without swallowing).
It’s been said that Oil of Oregano may stain your teeth, but when I personally use it each day I'm not incredibly concerned as I've never had gleaming white teeth anyway.  This oil is amazing for teeth sensitivity, or helping calm your mouth after dental work has been done.  Because Oil of Oregano is such an amazing germ and bacteria killer, using daily during your dental routine will keep other illnesses away such as cold and flu!

Soothing Baths

MOOD ENHANCEMENT BATHS

Here is why a bath works.  All of those muscles that feel tense and tight loosen in hot water.  Remember what you learned in Grade 9 science class: heat expands and cold shrinks.  In hot water, your muscles loosen, making it more comfortable, releasing the tension.  In a tub of water, you only need 6-12 drops in total.  Don't use more, as essential oils follow the "less is more" theory.  For example, if you're not finding there is enough lavender, cut back a drop in another oil to compensate for the extra drop you want.

Make sure the tub is always clean before using essential oils, free of soap residue, or remnants of the spider you had to kill earlier.

Bad moods, depression, sadness, and anger can all lead to stress, which takes a toll on your physical being.  If you need to enhance your mood, here are some recipes and tips to calm yourself.

Bad Mood Bath
Fill the tub with hot water
Before immersing yourself, add:

6 drops of Lavender
3 drops of Lemon
3 drops of Rose (popular for women)

To soften skin while you soak, in a shot glass, mix the essential oils in tea (seed) oil, then pour the mixture in the tub just before immersing yourself.  Close the curtain or shower door, close your eyes, and inhale.  Ideal soaking time is 15 minutes.

Angry Bath
Fill tub with hot water
Before immersing yourself, add:

6 drops of Bergamot
2 drops of Orange
4 drops of Clary Sage

To soften skin while you soak, in a shot glass, mix the essential oils in tea (seed) oil, then pour the mixture in the tub just before immersing yourself.  Close the curtain or shower door, close your eyes, and inhale.  Ideal soaking time is 15 minutes.

Heartbreak Bath
Fill tub with hot water
Before immersing yourself, add:

6 drops of Lavender
2 drops of Rose
2 drops of Neroli

To soften skin while you soak, in a shot glass, mix the essential oils in tea (seed) oil, then pour the mixture in the tub just before immersing yourself.  Close the curtain or shower door, close your eyes, and inhale.  Ideal soaking time is 15 minutes.
(And just know that you're better off without them.)

BATHS FOR THE SICK AND IRRITABLE

If you are suffering from an ailment, the key is to be as comfortable as possible, and inhale the scents of these aromas.  For skin conditions, focus on the right oils that also benefit topically.

Cold n' Sniffles Bath
You will get more out of this bath by turning your bathroom in to a little sauna.  Close all of the doors to the bathroom, turn off the fans, and start by running your shower with only the hottest water until your bathroom is nice and steamy.  Once you have the steam, fill the tub with very hot water (don't scald yourself, just enough that you are going to benefit from steam).  Before immersing yourself, add:

6 Drops of Eucalyptus
6 Drops of Camphor* (or Cypress)
1 Drop of Peppermint

Breathe!!

*Though Camphor is an ingredient used in Vicks VapoRub, it is potentially dangerous to use, and can be harmful over time.  Use sparingly.

Anti-Itch Bath
Fill your tub with warm water.  The temperature of the water here is important.  You don't want it too hot to upset the skin any further.  Ideally you want to soak in warmer than tepid water so you don't shock the skin.  Before immersing yourself, prepare a shot glass of 30ml of Sweet Almond oil, adding the oils below.  Swish it around and pour in to the tub, mixing it well in to the water.  While soaking, cup handfuls of the oiled water on to the problem areas.  After soaking for 15 minutes, only pat dry, trying to leave as much of the oils still on your skin.  (Follow up with the Cooling Anti-Itch Powder.)

5 Drops of Peppermint
4 Drops of Tea Tree
2 Drops of Eucalyptus
2 Drops of Rose
1 Drop of Myrrh

Unhappy Genitals Soak
Fill tub with warm-to-hot water, and be prepared to lie still and let the oils do their work.  This is where your main concern is to be comfortable.  There are two parts to this bath, so it is wise to prepare your bed or bedclothes with a linen spray first because once you are out of the tub, you should lie down after your treatment.

Part I, prepare the bath:

6 Drops of Tea Tree**
4 Drops of Lavender
4 Drops of Myrrh
4 Drops of Frankincense

Soak for 10-15 minutes.  Though you should lie still, occasionally swish the water in the tub to activate the oil around your problem area.  After your soak, gently pat dry the affected area, and prepare for the second part of the treatment.

Part II, apply the oil directly to the skin

**Tea Tree  (Myrrh can be substituted here, some people respond better to Myrrh, so if this is you, go ahead and use Myrrh instead)

Take a cotton swab and soak 3 drops of Tea Tree on to one end, and dot the problems.  Tea Tree can be applied neat, and is encouraged to continue this process (bath included) three or four times a day.  Once you have had your soak and applied the Tea Tree, climb in to your freshly sprayed bed (which should be dry by now!) and the rest of the healing is mental well-being.  Use a diffuser to enhance a relaxing state in the room (Lavender is a likely choice), light a tea-light candle (good to snooze to as it snuffs itself out after a couple of hours), and simply rest.

(Note:  This remedy is good for sebaceous glands bumps, fordyce bumps, folliculitis, genital herpes, yeast infections, treatment after removing ingrown hair, and anything that upsets your genitals.  As much as this is a relief, you should still consult a doctor if you feel very sore or the condition lasts longer than a few days.)

Balms

PERFUMES

Sometimes a little pick-me-up can be a solid perfume mixture of oil worn on your wrists, with the excess dabbed just under your nostrils.  This is very non-offensive as the oils will wear off within an hour, and do not contain chemicals that may not agree with others around you.

First make a base of solid wax.

Solid Perfume Wax Base
Boil water in a double boiler, and in a melting pot, melt:

2 heaping teaspoons of white beeswax (not to be confused with candle beeswax, check with your craft supplier to make sure the proper wax is the one you can use topically)
2 tablespoons of castor oil
1 teaspoon of coconut oil

Prepare your small cosmetic containers (30 ml for the recipes below) by first dropping in the essential oils that are your favourites mixed together or on their own.  (**Note, do NOT add them after you pour or you will end up with spotty, unmixed, uneven, and unsightly mixtures as the waxes immediately begin cooling.)  Swish around melted wax, and get ready to pour!

Headache Rub

8 drops of Peppermint
6 drops of Lavender
4 drops of Eucalyptus

Dab on your temples, or a little under the nose for fast relief.

Floral Perfume

6 drops of Rose
4 drops of Geranium
4 drops of Rosemary
2 drops of Jasmine

Elegance Perfume

2 drops of Lemon
2 drops of Bergamot
2 drops of Jasmine
2 drops of Neroli
2 drops of Rose
2 drops of Ylang Ylang

Both perfumes are lovely when dabbed on the back of your wrists, earlobes, knees.. and cleavage. :)

SALVES

Vapor Rub

3 Tbsp of Coconut Oil
1 Tbsp of Beeswax
8 Drops of Camphor*
8 Drops of Eucalyptus
3 Drops of Peppermint
3 Drops of Lavender

In a double boiler, melt the coconut oil.  Prepare a jar with the oils, swish around, then add the melted oil to the mixture.  Allow it to cool and set, then top it tightly with a lid.
*You may omit this oil at your discretion.  Camphor should not be used regularly.  Aromatherapy list this as a "dangerous" oil that should only be used sparingly.

Lavender Lip Balm
Prepare the Solid Perfume Base Wax for a smooth balm, OR
Prepare melted Coconut Oil
(The texture of your balm is up to you, coconut oil is much more moisturizing - more salve-like.)
In a cosmetic container, add:

6-8 Drops of Lavender
4 Drops of Chamomile
2 Drops of Lemon
2 Drops of Rose

Swish around the oils, and pour the melted oil to the mixture.  Cool and set, top it with a lid.

Head & Heel Salve
Melt 2 Tbsp of Coconut Oil and 1 Heaping Tsp of Beeswax in a double boiler and prepare a jar with the following oils:

1/2 Tsp of Jojoba Oil
8 Drops of Peppermint
5 Drops of Chamomile
3-4 Drops of Cypress

Swish around the oils together in the jar, then pour melted oil in to the mixture.  Top it with a lid.  (This mixture will not be cream-like or wax-like.  This is more of an oily-mixture, and when applied generously to the bottom of your feet, concentrating on the heels, this will also help relieve a headache at the same time!

Topical Body & Face Sprays

Most aromatherapists will tell you not to spray anything on your face (fearing you will get it in your eyes or in your mouth).  These sprays just feel so good on your face and neck, and on the feet that it's hard not to include it here.  Prepare a 50ml bottle with natural purified water filled nearly to the top, leaving room to add the essential oils.  (Here's a brilliant tip when spraying on your face:  Close your eyes, and close your mouth.)

FACE SPRAYS

Icy Revival Spray

2 drops of Spearmint
2 drops of Lavender
2 drops of Lemon
2 drops of Eucalyptus
2 drops of Bergamot
1 drop of Rosemary

Calm Your Nerves Spray
4 drops of Lavender
4 drops of Clary Sage
3 drops of Bergamot

BODY SPRAYS

Don't Bug Me Spray
This is a good spray for your skin, however to keep bugs away from entrances to your home, spray on window screens, or decor around doors and windows.  What is nice is that you don't have to commit to the smell, as it wears off and needs to be reapplied to continue the affect after about an hour.
Once you have the bottle of distilled water, leave a little bit more room for 1/2 Tsp Vegetable Glycerin, and 1 Tsp of Witch Hazel, then add and mix these oils:

10 Drops of Lemongrass
4-5 Drops of Lavender
1 Drop of Peppermint

This is not recommended for sunbathers.  If bugs are a daytime problem, spray on to your skin, then cover up.  At nighttime, no other precaution is required.  Compared to Off! this is just a beautifully scented spray, agreeable to humans and disgusting to a mosquito!

Body Odour Spray/Deodorant
(Measured for a 10ml spray/spritz bottle)

Fill half the bottle with Witch Hazel
Fill half the bottle with Rose Water
10 Drops of Cypress

Gently shake the bottle, and spritz directly on to the underarms, then gently rub the mixture in with your fingertips.  If you have just shaved or wax, this will irritate, so if you still want the benefit of the oils to work, try mixing a few drops with a dollup of unscented cream, take several minutes to let it absorb, and apply your usual deodorant, if desired.  Otherwise, if the hair follicle hasn't been disturbed, spritz the mixture on, rub in to the skin, and then directly on to the mixture, drop one neat drop in to the underarm and mix with your fingertips again.  You'll be amazed.  There will be no bad body odour from your underarms for the entire day.

HAIR SPRITZER

This spray is nice on towel-dried hair, after the tangles are combed out.   Please keep in mind that if you use hair colouring (notably blondes and redheads) that the essential oils may affect the colour, if not right away - over time.  This is really best on natural hair.  At one point I was using this on my 6-month old bleach job, where the colour to me didn't matter as much, I just wanted it to be healthy for the next time I got my hair done!  Once the spritzer is made, gently shake before each use.

Refreshing Hair Spray
(This is also measured for a 50ml bottle)

1/8 Cup of aloe juice
1/4 Cup of witch hazel
1/2 Tsp vegetable glycerin
1/8 Cup of rosewater

Prepare the above ingredients, and pour in to a 50ml bottle with a fine mist, leaving room for 20 drops of oils total.

8 drops of Lemon
4 drops of Ylang Ylang
5 drops of Rosemary
3 drops of Chamomile

You may alter the drops to benefit your problem areas.
Lemon - For added shine
Ylang Ylang - Good for split ends
Rosemary - Promotes hair growth, strengthens hair
Chamomile - Good for the scalp, promoting healthy re-growth

Bed Linen Sprays

I believe bed sprays are important.  Think about how often you launder your bed sheets.  Even if you shower or bathe before bed, you still perspire through the night, leaving your sheets to house new bacteria until the next time you wash them.  One neat little trick I created was a deodorizing bed spray to use when making your bed, and again before going to bed at night.  Freshen up your sheets and sleep comfortably!

Using a spray in the morning when you make the bed will not give the same effect as the oil will have evaporated within a couple of hours and will be useless at bedtime (or even an afternoon nap).  If you choose to benefit from the scent as well, spray again 20-30 minutes before you go to bed.

In a 50ml spray bottle, pour distilled water, nearly to the top leaving room for the oils.  Once made, give a gentle shake before each use.

Just Breathe Spray
I find this spray to be more deodorizing than anything, and you can adjust the scent strength by decreasing the drops if you find this is too strong.  I personally love the smell of a forest in my bedroom, which is why I added more of the oils.

8 drops of Camphor
8-10 drops of Cypress
3 drop of Eucalyptus

Was It Good for You Too? Spray

Nice to use if you have company.

3 drops of Rose
1 drop of Ylang Ylang
1 drop of Chamomile

It's Just a Nap Spray

Good for a nap, not a deep sleep as these scents are more invigorating.

2 drops of Orange or Grapefruit
2 drops of Lemon
2 drops of Lavender

Sleep Like a Corpse Spray

10 drops of Lavender
5 drops of Frankincence

Cooling Anti-Itch Powder

This is the recipe that kicked off a lot of talk that I should share my ideas, and is featured in www.thebrightersideyyc.com!  I know you'll love it if you experience itchy skin in any form, whether it's from bedsheets washed in laundry soap that doesn't agree with you, or nagging mosquito bites.  It's easy to make and feels fabulous!

Cooling Anti-Itch Powder

In a bowl, sift and mix:

2/3 Cup of Arrowroot Powder
2/3 Cup of Cornstarch
1 heaping Tbsp Baking Soda

This could get messy.  Use a deep bowl because this powder mixture will get everywhere.  On one cosmetic pad, add the essential oils (see amounts below).  On second cosmetic pad, add a 1/2 Tsp of Tea (seed) oil.

6 drops of Peppermint
4 drops of Eucalyptus
4 drops of Lavender
2 drops of Rose
2 drops of Ylang Ylang
2 drops of Tea Tree

Spoon half of the powder mixture in to a glass jar.  Add the two cosmetic balls.  Add the second half of the powder mixture.  Screw the lid on and shake.  This powder can be ready for use in one day, but to get a nicely cured powder, leave in the jar for at least three days (up to a week if you can stand it), shaking the jar at least a few times each day.  After a couple of days, you may want to put in two fresh new cosmetic pads with oil.  This is a very minty, cooling powder.  If you suffer from itch that keeps you from sleeping, dust a bit of this powder on your bed sheets just before you go to bed
